Now, Sir, I wish to bring to your notice a few events which greatly led me into this unfortunate affair; the prisoner Brown who has accused me of assault, has ever since his term of imprisonment, which has been now five months and a week, been most troublesome and a source of aggravation that I have had to deal with. The prisoners' report book can uphold my statements as to his character here; I have had several occasions for reporting him for breach of Gaol discipline; not less than three times has he been reported for insolent language towards me and other officers; and on several other occasions for various causes. He has tried to injure my character by lying to the Superintendent about me. This is a man that has already fulfilled a period of two years' imprisonment in India, which can be proved by a gentleman of high standing in this Colony. And therefore he is no new hand at inventing tales for the purpose of injuring officers before their superiors. In fact, it can be proved that the man used to boast that he did not care if an officer reported him.
